Thriller Opening - Reservoir Dogs - Harry's Post

The first thing you notice is the sound bridge between the opening credits and the first scene, it is the voice of a man discussing what sounds like a song, in a very sexual manner, this instantly sets the tone for the rest of the scene.

The first actual image of the scene is what appears to be an over the shoulder 3 person shot. All three in black suits with the two facing the camera smoking.

The camera pans around the table to show more men in black suits sitting around a table. There is only diagetic sound of them still discussing a song in a sexual manner.

It then cuts to one of the men sitting round the table eating. As he is the first person to be properly focused on (in a close up) it could mean he is of some importance. The costumes that are worn by the characters could mean they have been to some kind of event such as a wedding or a funeral. It helps create the effect that something has happened.

Every shot for the next few are obscured by people around the table; different conversations are going on as well which when mixed with the obscurity of the camera work helps create a sense of uncertainty or cautiousness.

There is one character who is played by the director Quentin Tarantino (who tries to play little roles in every film he directs) that talks throughout the entire scene, he very explicitly describes a story throughout. You can tell by the looks on everyone else's faces that they are uncomfortable listening to it, this allows the viewer to think whether or not he belongs there. Maybe he's new?

  1. You are tending to describe Harry. You need to think about why this is a thriller and HOW the film is being constructed through the 4 technical codes , to create this. You analyse on occasions but you need to do so more consistently. Come and find me during a support period and we can go through one of these. Your presentation is certainly good and you use correct terms
